From Sketch to Wall: How I Design a Mural (Step-by-Step)

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

Murals transform blank walls into powerful visual stories. But what goes into designing a mural from scratch? In this blog, I guide you on how to design a mural. We start from the initial idea and continue to the final stroke of paint. If youโ€™re new to mural art, check out this overview of mural history and styles from the Smithsonian. It will help you see how murals have evolved across cultures.

Thereโ€™s something magical about standing in front of a blank wall, imagining what it could become. Behind every vibrant mural is a deeply thoughtful process. This process blends art, logistics, and communication. It also involves a good amount of improvisation.

Hereโ€™s how I take a mural from concept to completion โ€” step by step.

Start With the Wall โ€” and the Why

Before I ever pick up a pencil or paintbrush, I visit the wall in person. I take measurements, photos, and most importantly, I ask questions:

  • Who is this mural for?
  • What message or feeling should it express?
  • Whatโ€™s the story of the space?

Understanding the why behind a mural helps guide every creative decision that follows.

๐ŸŽฏ Pro tip: Always check the surface material and lighting. Consider how people will view the wall. Is it from across the street or just a few feet away?

Mood boarding & Brainstorming

This is when the ideas start to take shape. I gather references, colors, textures, and inspiration into a mood board. Sometimes itโ€™s digital; sometimes itโ€™s old-school magazine clippings and sketches.

Color plays a huge role in this stage. Will the palette energize, soothe, or inspire people walking by?

โ€œMood boards arenโ€™t just pretty โ€” theyโ€™re the emotional foundation of the piece.โ€

Sketches & Concepts

Once I feel the vibe, I dive into sketching. I might create 3โ€“5 rough compositions and experiment with layout, symbolism, and flow.

If Iโ€™m working with a client or community, this is when I send over early concepts and get feedback. Itโ€™s all about collaboration, not perfection โ€” yet.

Scale It Up: From Paper to Wall

Next, I scale the final sketch to match the wall dimensions. Depending on the wall, I might:

  • Use a grid system
  • Project the design at night
  • Use in-studio canvas
  • Or freehand it, if Iโ€™m feeling bold and the surface is forgiving

This step can feel technical. Itโ€™s also exciting. Itโ€™s the moment the art leaves the page and becomes part of the real world.

Painting: The Living Phase

This is where the mural truly comes to life. Layer by layer, I block in colors, refine details, and adjust as needed.

Weather, texture, and even passerby reactions can shape the muralโ€™s evolution. I keep things flexible because the wall always has something to say.

Final Touches & Finishing

Once the mural is painted, I step back. I refine line work, edges, and blending. Additionally, I focus on any highlights that make it pop.

I seal the mural (if needed), sign it, and document it with photography or video.

Final Thoughts: Every Wall Tells a Story

Mural design isnโ€™t just about painting big โ€” itโ€™s about listening, adapting, and putting meaning into every brushstroke. No two murals are ever the same, and thatโ€™s exactly what makes it such a beautiful art form.
